The Dr. Shannon Walker Library blends nature, community, and sustainability with native plantings, shaded gathering spaces, and resilient stormwater management.
The library’s landscape integrates stormwater management, native plantings, and shaded gathering areas to enhance community resilience against flooding.
Designed for connection and engagement, the outdoor spaces offer flexible gathering areas, public art, and tranquil green spaces.
Built on a former post office lot, the 23,260 sf facility replaces two flood-damaged libraries and integrates lush, art-filled outdoor spaces that enhance the user experience. The pedestrian-friendly entrance engages the surrounding residential neighborhood, seamlessly blending into the urban fabric.
Expansive glazing and deep site cuts allow natural elements to flow into the library, offering diverse outdoor experiences in scale and function. Public gathering spaces feature native plantings and shaded seating that create inviting outdoor rooms for relaxation and social interaction
Flexible outdoor areas include spaces for reading, gathering, and collaborating, complemented by a café terrace and multipurpose plazas. Rain gardens and bioswales help manage stormwater sustainably, supporting the site’s resilience to flooding while enhancing ecological value. Thoughtfully placed trees and green buffers provide shade and a sense of tranquility, while artistic lighting and vibrant seasonal plantings bring the landscape to life throughout the year.
The library’s landscape fosters creativity, learning, and community engagement in a setting that celebrates nature.
