PlaceM4KE P4! is a placemaking design plan that prioritizes pedestrians at the forefront of a vibrant and safe streetscape in Gulfton and Sharpstown neighborhoods. Houston’s Gulfton and Sharpstown neighborhoods are known for their vibrant culture and lively streets, yet the infrastructure mainly prioritizes automobiles. To address pedestrian safety and support diverse lifestyles, PlaceM4KE P4! is a project to uplift and activate the pedestrian realm along four main corridors: Glenmont, Westward, Hornwood, and Renwick. Asakura Robinson developed a conceptual design for each corridor to address four main elements: lifestyles.

Cooling: establishing cooling strategies through shade structures and the addition of188 Street Trees and 60 Ornamental Trees throughout the four corridors. Lighting: incorporating better suited pedestrian lighting to improve visibility and safety.

Lifting: utilizing murals, sculptures, and additional art elements into the right-of-way to create more interactive and vibrant public realm.

Moving: improving sidewalk conditions, incorporating traffic calming measures, and introducing a shared-use path along Westward and Renwick.

Innovative designs prioritize pedestrian inclusion, outdoor community engagement, and green space. By enhancing walkability, maximizing greenery, and reconfiguring traffic, the project aims to create comfortable, efficient outdoor spaces that accommodates diverse.
